Bruins secure series win with split against PC

NSAA Standings

ABERDEEN, S.D. -- The Bellevue University baseball team won another North Star Athletic Association series after splitting a double-header on Saturday. BU won the opener 13-2 before falling 7-2 in the finale at Fossum Field.

Bellevue moved to 30-12 on the year and 12-4 in NSAA play while the Saints are now 8-37 overall and 4-19 in league action.

Game One: BU 13, PC 2 (7 Innings)

Three Bruins went deep in the opener as Bellevue ran their win-streak to four.

Conner Barnett led off the game with a solo shot to left and Riley Baasch added a two-run bomb later in the inning as BU scored five times in the top of the first.

Bellevue added four more in the second and, with a 10-0 lead, Zach Diehl took his turn to go yard, launching a two-run shot to left in the top of the fourth.

Presentation got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI-double by Mathias Gonzalez and a run-scoring groundout from Francisco Avena.

Barnett finished the scoring with his RBI-single to plate Diehl in the seventh.

Charlie Patterson struck out eight against four walks in four innings of work. He picked up the victory to improve to 6-1, allowing a pair of runs on two hits.

Alexandro Celiceo and Derek Browne combined for three shutout innings of relief in which the duo combined to strike out four and allow three hits.

Jakub Tate (0-6) was saddled with the loss after being tagged for nine runs (eight earned) on seven hits and a pair of walks in just two innings of work.

Game Two: PC 7, BU 2

Mathias Gonzalez staked the Saints to an early lead with a solo home run in the second inning but a four-run fifth is what gave Presentation the necessary insurance to salvage a victory in the series finale and avoid a sweep.

Leading 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth, John Froese effectively put the game away with a two-run single to right.

Chaz Lopez had a pair of hits for the Bruins and Josh Vaughan drove in the only runs with his two-run single in the seventh.

Bruin starter Corey Jackson (6-3) struck out nine but issued seven walks and allowed three hits in 4.1 innings of work leading to five Presentation runs.

PC's Carson Dobias turned in a quality start to get the win, improving to 2-1 on the hill on the year. He allowed two runs – one earned – on six hits while striking out three and walking two.
