Texas Wesleyan sweeps BU in Top 20 showdown

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Despite allowing just 11 hits in two games of a double-header the No. 7-ranked Bellevue University baseball team suffered a pair of non-conference losses to No. 17-ranked Texas Wesleyan University on Sunday afternoon at Sycamore Park.

The Bruins fell 6-1 in the opener and dropped a 4-2 contest in the nightcap.

Records:

#7 Bellevue: 3-4
#17 Texas Wesleyan: 11-5

Game One: TxWes 6, BU 1

Hunter Jury led off the third with a double and came in to score after a pair of productive outs to put the Bruins on the board first.

Texas Wesleyan answered with five runs in the home half of the third on four hits, four walks, and a BU error.

The Rams tacked on an insurance run in the sixth as Joaquin Ballesteros singled to right to plate Kaden Brown. Ballesteros was thrown at a second trying to stretch the single into a double and Kevin Santiago was gunned down at the dish to end the frame.

Bellevue was unable to muster anything else off Rams starter Gabriel Sequeria (3-0) the rest of the way as Sequeria logged the complete game victory, allowing just two hits and striking out 16 Bruin batters.

Bruin starter Charlie Patterson (1-1) was lifted in the fourth after allowing five runs – two earned – on five hits. Colton Walker came on in relief and threw effectively in his season debut, allowing just an unearned run on one hit in 2.2 innings.

Jury was 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles to account for both Bruin hits in the game.

Game Two: TxWes 4, BU 2

Andrew Ishii wasted no time putting the Bruins on top in the first with a two-out, solo home run.

Texas Wesleyan answered back in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own on an RBI-ground out by Tanner Amaral that scored Kaden Brown.

The game remained deadlocked until the fourth when TWU broke through with an RBI-single off the bat of Marcos Sanchez that scored Michael Higgins.

The Rams added onto their lead an inning later thanks to a two-run homer from Amaral to push the advantage to 4-1.

Bellevue tried to mount a rally in the seventh when Bailey Link reached base via a hit by pitch to lead off the frame. With two outs and pinch runner Micah Savine at second, Cody Banks singled to right to score a run and bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Ishii.

That chased TWU starter Jesse Ramirez and got into the bullpen. Ishii drew a walk to bring Baasch but closer Cameron Calhoun (Sv, 3) earned the save by inducing a game-ending fielder's choice.

Corey Jackson (0-2) took the loss for Bellevue. He threw all six innings and surrendered four runs on five hits, walking three and striking out six Ram batters.

Ramirez (3-0) struck out 10 over 6.2 innings to pick up the win for Texas Wesleyan. He limited Bellevue to a pair of runs on six hits and did not issue a walk.
