No. 6 Bruins sweep Oklahoma Wesleyan, 9-7, 6-0

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. -- The sixth-ranked Bellevue University baseball team ran its winning streak to 11 games with a doubleheader sweep at Oklahama Wesleyan University Friday afternoon at Doenges Stadium. The Bruins slipped by the Eagles 9-7 in the opener, before shutting out OWU in the nightcap, 6-0. 

Bellevue improved to 37-6-1 on the season and 16-2 in the MCAC. OWU fell to 27-20 overall and 9-9 in league action. 

The four-game series will conclude on Saturday (April 20) with a 12 p.m. doubleheader in Bartlesville. 

Game 1: Bellevue 9, Oklahoma Wesleyan 7

Nate Mullins went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBIs to pace the Bruin offense to a 9-7 win in the opener. Ryan Knutz finished 2-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBIs. Tanner Moore drove in two runs, while scoring three runs, going 1-for-3 at the plate. 

After a scoreless first two innings, the Bruins racked up four runs in the third on two-run homers by Knutz and Mullins. 

The Eagles cut the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Nick Palese.

Bellevue got the run back in the top of the fifth when Zack Clark scored from third on a passed ball. 

OWU tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs, highlighted by a two-run double by Nick Palese.

The Bruins responded in the top of the seventh, regaining the lead with a two-run single by Moore. Moore later scored on a passed ball to give BU an 8-5 advantage. 

One-run singles by Chris McElderry and Jerett Hardy trimmed the BU lead to 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh.

Moore walked in the top of the ninth and was driven in by an RBI double from Mullins to give the Bruins a 9-7 lead. 

Robert Greco (7-2) picked up the win, striking out five and walking one while giving up nine hits and seven runs in 6.1 innings. Kyle Kinman notched his second save of the season, allowing just one hit, while striking out two in the final two innings of the game. 

Game 2: Bellevue 6, Oklahoma Wesleyan 0

Michael Calderon tossed a six-hit complete-game shutout as the Bruins cruised to the 6-0 win in the nightcap. 

After going hitless for the first three innings, the Bruins erupted for four runs on four-consecutive hits in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a three-run triple by Knutz and an RBI single by Brian Embery.

The BU lead moved to 5-0 in the fifth on an RBI single to right field by Dusty Kerns that plated Moore.

A ground-out RBI by Kinman put the Bruins up 6-0 in the sixth frame. 

Calderon improved to 5-1 on the season, collecting four strikeouts with one walk and six hits in seven innings on the mound.
