Bruins avenge Friday losses with Saturday sweep over No. 16 York

OMAHA, Neb. -- The ninth-ranked Bellevue University baseball team avenged Friday's doubleheader sweep, evening the four-game series with two victories over No. 16 York College, winning 13-6 and 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Westgate Field. 

The Bruins improved to 28-6-1 on the season and 10-2 in the MCAC. York fell to 30-9 overall and 12-2 in league play.

With the victory in the opener, BU snapped York's 21-game winning streak.

Game 1: Bellevue 13, York 6

BU scored three runs in the seventh and added another four runs in the eighth as the Bruins prevailed in the 13-6 slugfest. The two teams combined for 28 hits and five home runs in the opener.

YC used a pair of two-out RBI singles by Alec Abend and Brett Wise to take an early 3-0 in the top of the first inning.

Bryce Kelly pulled the Bruins within a run, 3-2, on a two-run home run in the second inning before Kyle Kinman blasted a solo home run and Kelly added an RBI single to give BU a 4-3 edge at the end of the third.

The Panthers answered back with an RBI infield single by Isidro Carrizoza in the top half of the fourth to tie the game at 4-4.

Nate Mullins put BU on top, 6-4, with a two-run homer to left center in the fifth that scored Tanner Moore who led the inning off with a single.

YC used a Matt Owen two-run home run to even the game at 6-6 in the seventh, but Brian Embery recorded the Bruins' fourth home run of the game, a three-run blast over left field fence, to put BU back on top, 9-6, in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Mullins, Kelly and Embery each recorded RBIs as the Bruins scored four runs in the eighth to propel them to the 13-6 win.

Ricky Holm improved to 6-0 recording eight strikeouts in seven innings of work. Kinman notched his first save of the year in relief. Josh Knoll (4-3) suffered the loss for the Panthers.

Game 2: Bellevue 3, York 1

Kody McFarland tossed a four-hitter and the Bruins got RBIs from Embery, Ryan Knutz, and Andy Smolinski, completing the sweep with the 3-1 win in the nightcap. Bellevue outhit the Panthers 10-4 in the victory.

An RBI single to center field by Wise gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. The Bruins responded in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to right field by Embery and an RBI double to center field by Knutz to give BU a 2-1 advantage. 

Bellevue got an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single by Smolinski to cushion the margin to 3-1.

Knutz finished 2-for-2 with two doubles and an RBI. Embery went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. 

McFarland improved to 4-1 on the season with the complete game win, striking out three while walking five.
