No. 12 Bruins sweep Waldorf; extend winning streak to 16 games

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University baseball team extended its winning streak to 16 games after a doubleheader sweep against Waldorf College Thursday afternoon in Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Westgate Field. The Bruins took the first game 7-1 before posting a 6-5 win in the finale.

Bellevue, ranked No. 12 in the NAIA, improved to 22-4-1 overall and 6-0 in league action while Waldorf fell to 5-18 and 0-4 in the MCAC.

The Bruins will conclude their four-game conference series with Waldorf tomorrow (March 29) at 1:00 p.m. at Westgate Field.

Game 1: Bellevue 7, Waldorf 1

Robert Greco (5-1) held the Warriors to just four hits with four strikeouts to lead the Bruins to a 7-1 win in the opener.

The Bruins capitalized on a two-out error by WC shortstop Zac Bendickson and scored three runs in the bottom half of the first inning on RBI singles by Dusty Kerns and Brian Embery and a bases-loaded hit batsmen.

BU extended its lead in the third on Beau Dahmen's sacrifice fly and scored another run on its second bases-loaded hit batsmen of the game to take a 5-0 lead at the end of the fourth inning.

The Warriors scored their only run of the game in the eighth inning on Keith Cullivan's single.

The Bruins answered back in the bottom half of the inning with a Nate Mullins double off the left center fence and a run-scoring groundout by Embery for the 7-1 win.

Matt Hutchins (1-5) suffered the loss for WC, allowing five runs on five hits with six strikeouts in six innings of work.

Game 2: Bellevue 6, Waldorf 5

Despite being outhit 11-10, BU edged the Warriors 6-5 in the nightcap.

The Warriors struck first on a balk by BU starting  pitcher Michael Calderon and an RBI single by Brandon Pizzo to take a quick 2-0 advantage in the first.

BU responded in the bottom half of the first inning on Mullins' two-run RBI single that scored Zack Clark and Kyle Kinman.

Ryan Knutz put the Bruins on top, 3-2, with a home run over the left center fence in the second.

WC took advantage of two Bruin errors and scored three runs on three hits as they regained the lead in the third, 5-3.

Kinman hit a two-run double down the right field line and Tanner Moore added an RBI single to give BU a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

Kinman earned the win in relief, improving to 4-2 on the season.
