Big fifth inning lifts Bruins over Midland, 8-1

FREMONT, Neb. -- The 17th-ranked Bellevue University baseball team used a five-run fifth inning to propel them to an 8-1 nonconference victory over Midland University Friday afternoon at Moller Field.

Bellevue has now won 13-straight games, improving to 19-4-1 on the season. Midland fell to 16-8 on the season. 

The Bruins grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, scoring on an error and an RBI single by Ryan Knutz extended the BU lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth.

Bellevue struck for five runs in the fifth on a three-run homer by Dusty Kerns and a two-run single by Brian Embery to give the Bruins a 7-0 advantage. 

Midland got on scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by Nolan Groebli to cut the lead to 7-1.

The Bruins added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, scoring on Tanner Moore's single.

Ricky Holm (4-0), Kody McFarland, Michael Calderon and Robert Greco held the Warriors to just one hit with 13 strikeouts and just one walk.

The Bruins will host Midland on Tuesday, March 26 at 3 p.m. at Westgate Field in a single nine-inning contest.
