Jamestown outlasts Bruins, 3-2

PAPILLION, Neb. -- The University of Jamestown erased an early deficit as they defeated the Bellevue University women's soccer team 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Papillion Landing.

Jamestown evened their overall record at 7-7-0 with their second-straight victory. Bellevue saw their overall mark dip to 7-4-2 with consecutive defeats for the first time this season.

The Bruins put the first shot on target with Lily Humes taking a pass from Maju Serrano in the box, but her effort was saved.

Bellevue struck first, with Humes bagging her second goal of the season in the fifth minute. Serrano found Ketlyn Rota in the middle of the field, and Rota fed Humes in the box. From there, Humes deked keeper Allyson Johnson and eluded a defender before finishing into a vacant net.

Orianna Borrome equalized for Jamestown two and a half minutes later when she headed home a corner from Korey Puga for her first goal of the campaign.

Vega Canada fed Sidney Mikes, who unleashed a high shot to the near side for a 2-1 Jimmie lead, which UJ carried into halftime.

At the intermission, Jamestown held an 8-7 advantage in shots, 7-5 in shots on goal, and 3-0 in corner kicks.

Jamestown doubled their advantage with a 63rd-minute strike from Alyssa Caton. Kyah Gabel played Caton in at the edge of the BU 18 and Caton ripped a shot on goal past Alessia Ricciardi for a 3-1 Jimmie lead.

Serrano pulled Bellevue back within a goal in the 72nd minute. Britney Nolte sent a throw-in, which BU knocked around deep in UJ territory before Nolte found an oncoming Serrano, who curled a shot from off the corner of the 18 into the back of the net for her third tally of the season.

The Jimmies had a chance to put the game away in the 87th minute as Haley Nelson carried the ball into the box and whipped a low shot on goal, but Ricciardi made a diving stop to keep BU within a goal.

Bellevue finished with advantages of 16-11 in shots and 12-10 in shots on goal. Jamestown won five corners to BU's two.

Ricciardi finished with six saves for the Bruins, and Johnson totaled 10 in goal for Jamestown.
Bellevue returns home on Tuesday, Oct. 22, when they host Viterbo University for a 1 p.m. kick-off from Papillion Landing.
