CRETE, Neb. -- In a game that featured 30 shots on goal, the Bellevue University women's soccer team raced out to a 3-0 lead and pushed it to 4-1 before holding on for a 5-4 victory at Doane University Saturday afternoon at Al Papik Field.
With the win, the Bruins improved to 5-1-1 on the season. Doane fell to 1-2-0 overall.
Ella Pelletier gave BU an early 1-0 lead just one minute into the contest with a goal assisted by Maju Serrano.
Emma Madej made it 2-0 in the 10th minute after she scored with the help of an Ximena Jauregui assist.
The duo reversed roles to push the margin to 3-0 in the 18th minute as Jauregi netted a goal off an assist by Madej.
Denise Gomez got the Tigers on the board at 22:34 with a goal assisted by McKenna Rathbun to slice the advantage to 3-1.
The Bruins, once again, made it a three-goal contest when Madej scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season on an unassisted maneuver in the 52nd minute.
Doane mounted a furious comeback, tying the contest with three goals over a 23-minute span that knotted the contest at 4-4.
Savannah Franzboy slotted a goal in the 56th minute off an assist by Gomez to make it 4-2. Rathbun made it 4-3 with an unassisted goal at 68:32. Lexi Torok's goal off a pass from Celeste Galvan tied it up at 78:34.
Layla Vazquez scored the game-winner for the Bruins with a shot into the back of the net off a pass from Jauregui with just 4:32 remaining in the contest to make the final 5-4.
Alessia Ricciardi improved to 3-1-1 on the season, allowing four goals while producing five saves in the victory. Grayce Souther (1-1) suffered the loss despite collecting 16 saves. She allowed all five goals in 90 minutes of action.
The Bruins are back in action on Wednesday (Sept. 6) when they host Dordt University at 6 p.m. at Papillion Landing.
