CUNE slips past BU in overtime

PAPILLION, Neb. -- Lina Kirst's goal in double overtime gave Concordia University a 2-1 win over the Bellevue University women's soccer team on Wednesday evening at Papillion Landing.

CUNE 2, Bruins 1 (2 OT)

Bethany Fuchs sent a cross in to the edge of the six for Lina Kirst to run onto and tap home for the game-winner for Concordia 1:46 into the second overtime.

Fuchs put the Bulldogs on top in the 20th minute. After taking a pass from Mikeila Martinez at the edge of the 18 and sent a shot in high over the out-stretched arms of BU keeper Sabrina Staufenbiel.

The game remained 1-0 in favor of CUNE by halftime despite Bellevue out-shooting their guests by a narrow 8-7 margin.

With under 10 minutes to play and the game still 1-0, the Bruins were awarded a penalty. Bruna Bielski stepped to the spot and unleashed a hard shot into the back of the net to tie the game and force overtime.

Staufenbiel finished with seven saves for Bellevue. CUNE's Kalie Ward made five saves in the win.

Both teams finished with 17 shots while CUNE out-shot the Bruins 9-6 on goal.

"It's a great response from us tonight and I'm proud of the effort. The back four did a great job moving us forward and Sinai Bernal worked tirelessly throughout and was a threat every time she got on the ball."

Bellevue travels to Lima, Ohio to face their first Top 25 opponent of the season. The Bruins will meet #24 Northwestern Ohio on Saturday, Sept. 18 for a 1 p.m. kick-off.
