Bruins notch fifth-straight shutout victory

STERLING, Kan. -- Marilia Lages scored twice and the Bruin defense posted their ninth shutout of the season as the Bellevue University women's soccer team defeated Sterling College, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon.

Bellevue improves to 9-2-0 with their fifth-straight win while Sterling remains winless, falling to 0-8-0 on the season.

Marilia Lages scored a pair of first half goals and Taylan Murphey added another strike as Bellevue dominated Sterling.

Lages opened up the scoring in the 17th minute with her seventh goal of the season off a pass from Bruna Cola Bielski.

Just over seven minutes later, Lages double the BU advantage scoring in the 24th minute off an Emah Maahs assist for her second goal of the game and eighth of the year.

Murphey pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 37th minute with her first collegiate goal, off a pass from Emma Phillipson.

The Bruins took a 3-0 lead into the halftime break on the strength of a 13-2 advantage in shots.

BU added 13 more shots in the second half, but were unable to build on their lead, as they finished with a 26-3 edge in shots for the game.

Sterling managed just three total shots and Sabrina Staufenbiel stopped the Warriors' only attempt on frame to record the clean sheet.

Shaylee Gibbs totaled seven saves for Sterling.

Player of the Match:

Emah Maahs and Morgan McIlnay were class in possession, knowing where and when to move the ball forward for Bellevue.

Coach Tom White:

"We were very pleased how we started the game today and solved problems from the get go. Second half we stayed in control but became frustrated with our decision making in the attacking third. Overall, we're happy and excited for a home game next week."
