Bruins score early, often in 4-0 victory over Midland

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University women's soccer team on their first three shots on goal and recorded their fourth straight shutout in a 4-0 home-opening victory over Midland University on Thursday evening at Bellevue Soccer Club.

Junior Karina Alvarez got things started early for the Bruins with a third minute goal. Senior Michelle Dolder fed a pass to sophomore Kristin Hanson in the middle of the field. Hanson took a few dribbles and passed to Alvarez just outside the 18-yard box. From there Alvarez took a touch and sent a shot to the far side that deflected off the inside of the far post and into the back of the net.

Senior Betsy Fischenich wasted no time in doubling the BU advantage. Fischenich took a pass from Dolder, settled with one touch, and blasted a shot high to the near side over the keeper's outstretched arms.

Fischenich scored her second goal of the match in the 10th minute off a pass from senior Kate Petersen. Her shot cut back across the field and over the keeper's head to sneak inside the far post for an early 3-0 Bruin lead.

Petersen added a goal on a 61st minute penalty kick to account for the final 4-0 margin.

Sophomore Laurence Rodier, making her second straight start in goal stopped all six shots that she faced, to record her third shutout of the season and improve to 3-1-0 on the year.

The Bruins owned a 23-14 advantage on shots in the match, including a 14-6 edge in shots on goal. Midland was called for 13 fouls while Bellevue was whistled for just six and the Warriors owned a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

With the shutout, Bellevue's scoreless streak on defense has now reached 394 minutes and 26 seconds.

Bellevue (5-2-0) is back in action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match against No. 13 Hastings College.
