BU sweeps Vikings to stay undefeated in league play

VALLEY CITY, N.D. -- The 12th-ranked Bellevue University volleyball team remained undefeated in league play with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 26-24) victory at Valley City State University Saturday afternoon at the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.  

With the win, the Bruins improved to 11-2 on the season and 9-0 in the NSAA. VCSU dropped to 4-15 overall and 3-7 in league play. 

Outside hitters Sierra Athen and Eve Fountain both produced 10 kills apiece to pace the BU offense. Athen recorded her fifth double-double of the season by adding 13 digs. 

Freshman Anna Koehler anchored the BU defense with a match-high 14 digs.

Freshman Jacki Apel had seven kills on .316 hitting while adding three blocks. Junior Coree Lipovsky hit .385 with six kills and one error on 13 attacks. 

Junior Olivia Galas dished out 34 assists while adding seven digs, five kills, and a pair of blocks. 

The Vikings were led by Caitlyn Fischbach and Katie Juarez, who both finished with six kills apiece. 

BU hit .324 in the opening set, led by Sienna Black's four kills on seven errorless swings as BU cruised to the 25-19 victory. 

Athen and Galas each had four kills in the second set as BU was sparked by a 10-3 run midway through the set, before holding on for the 25-22 win. 

Sparked by three kills and a block from Apel, the Bruins rallied from a 20-14 deficit in the third set to pull out a 26-24 victory capped by an emphatic kill from Lipovsky to earn the sweep.  

The Bruins will travel to La Crosse, Wis. next Friday, Mar. 19, for a 7 p.m. contest at Viterbo University.
