BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Despite both out-playing and out-shooting their guests the Bellevue University women's soccer team was defeated by Northwestern College, 1-0 in overtime, on Wednesday evening at Bellevue Soccer Club.
Bellevue falls south of the .500-mark at 1-2-0 with the loss while Northwestern sees their record improve to 2-1-0 on the year.
After 90 minutes of constant Bellevue pressure, it was the Red Raiders who got a big break following an odd sequence in overtime. A loose ball at the top of the box was won by Sarah Homan who unleashed a long-range shot that hit off the underside of the crossbar before bounding of the head of Bellevue's keeper and into the back for the net for the Golden Goal winner. The 108th minute goal was Homan's first of the season and came with just 2:59 showing on the clock in the first overtime period.
Bellevue looked to be the better team throughout the vast majority of Wednesday's match, holding substantial advantages in every major statistical category.
Northwestern had their best chance in the 78th minute when Tatiana Garcia received the ball behind the BU defense and found herself one-on-one with Bruin keeper Laurence Rodier but her shot from distance clanged off the crossbar and Rodier corralled it to keep the game scoreless.
The Bruins had a flurry of chances in the final few minutes of the match but were unable to get shots off in the crowded penalty area following corner kicks.
Final totals from the game saw BU out-shoot Northwestern 29-5 overall and 12-2 on goal but Naomi Schimmel was up to the task in net for the Red Raiders, stopping all 12 shots on frame. Additionally, Bellevue also held a 15-3 edge in corner kicks but despite numerous quality deliveries into the box they were unable to nab a goal.
The Bruins return to action next Wednesday, Sept. 6 when they travel to Seward, Neb. for a 7 p.m. kickoff against Concordia University.
