LA CROSSE, Wis. -- After cruising to an 8-0 win in six innings in the opener, the Bellevue University softball team overcame a 4-0 deficit to record a 6-5 eight-inning victory in the nightcap, to complete the series sweep at Viterbo University Sunday afternoon in North Star Athletic Association action.

Bellevue improved to 29-17 on the season and 16-4 in the NSAA. Viterbo fell to 8-39 overall and 2-17 in league play.

The Bruins will host College of St. Mary on Thursday, April 28 in a 4 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at the Lied Center.

Game 1: Bellevue 8, Viterbo 0 (6 innings)

The Bruins used the solid pitching of Kelli Fisher and four Viterbo fielding errors to help produce the 8-0 shutout win in six innings in the opener.

A two-run homer over the left-field fence gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. BU added three runs in the fourth, highlighted by an RBI single to center field by Kaitlyn Goney. A pair of V-Hawk throwing errors resulted in the other two runs of the inning.

The Bruins added three more runs in the sixth thanks to another VU fielding error, a ground-out RBI by Goney, and a sacrifice fly to left field by Emily Gigax, making it 8-0.

Fisher kept the V-Hawks in check the entire game, allowing just two hits, while striking out four and walking one, to improve to 18-10 on the season. It marked her fifth complete-game shutout of the season.

Goney and Siedlik both drove in two runs in the victory.

Game 2: Bellevue 6, Viterbo 5 (8 innings)

The Bruins needed some clutch hitting down the stretch to overcome a 4-0 deficit while capturing the 6-5 win in eight innings in the nightcap.

A two-run homer to left field by Anna Lensmire in the bottom of the first gave the V-Hawks their first lead (2-0) of the weekend series.

VU added two more runs in the second on a two-run triple to right field by Kelsey Ludwig, increasing the lead to 4-0.

The Bruins used a pair of two-run homers by Gigax and Siedlik to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth frame.

A two-run single by Goney in the top of the eighth gave BU its first lead of the contest at 6-4.

The V-Hawks cut the lead to 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single down the right-field line by Kennedy Tebo but Erin Sharpe was able to force Tebo out in the next at-bat to preserve the victory.

Sharpe (10-7) earned the win, allowing seven hits with three strikeouts and no walks in five innings of work.
