Combo guard Reed signs with BU

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Bellevue University men's basketball coach Lucas Gabriel announced today the signing of Ryan Reed (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento CC) to a letter of intent to continue his academic and athletic careers at Bellevue beginning in the fall.

Reed, a 6-1 combo guard, comes to Bellevue from Sacramento City College where he played his first two collegiate seasons.

Reed helped guide the Panthers to a 20-9 overall mark during the 2019-20 season as his team reached the second round of the CCCAA NorCal Regional Playoffs. For Sac City, it was their first 20-win season in well over a decade.

While at Sac City, Reed was a regular in the starting rotation as he racked up a scoring average of 13.9 points while draining 104 three-pointers to go with 4.2 rebounds per game for the Panthers. An excellent shooter, he shot over 80 percent from the free throw line in each of his two seasons for a career mark of 82.1 percent at the charity stripe.

Following a strong freshman campaign in which he averaged 11.6 points with over half his field goals coming from beyond the arc, Reed blossomed as a sophomore. In helping Sac City to a 20-win season, he averaged 16.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game while increasing his field goal percentage to 42.4 percent.

He scored in double figures in 22 of 29 games this past season, including going for 20-plus 14 times. Twice he scored a career-high 28 points, including doing so in the regular-season finale as the Panthers notched their 20th victory of the year, downing Folsom Lake, 88-82, on Feb. 21.

Closing the year strong, Reed averaged 19.8 points from Jan. 21-Feb. 21 as Sac City won 10 of their final 11 regular-season games. During that stretch, he shot 47.7 percent from the field, including going 22-of-53 (41.5 percent) from deep, and hit on 87.1 percent (54-62) of his free throw tries.

Reed joins earlier announced signee Justin Motley (Cleveland, Ohio/Riverside CC/South Plains) in the Bruins' 2020 recruiting class.

Bellevue posted a 24-8 overall mark in 2019-20, including a 13-1 record in NSAA play as they claimed their 11th-straight regular-season title. In its storied history, the Bruin basketball program has won 32 conference championships, qualified for 19 NAIA National Tournament Appearances, and made four trips to the NAIA Fab Four, with all of those coming since the 1997-98 season.
