Big second half lifts Bruins over Haskell, 99-84

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Trailing by a bucket at halftime, the fourth-ranked Bellevue University men's basketball team led by as many as 20 points in the second half en route to a 99-84 Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference victory Saturday night at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center. 

The Bruins won their eighth-straight game, improving to 22-3 on the season and 8-1 in the MCAC. Haskell fell to 5-20 overall and 3-6 in league play. 

Taylor Young led the Bruins with 22 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Alex Worthen-Harris finished with 20 points and nine rebounds. Yusuf Shehata (12) and Thomas Hammock (11) were also in double figures for the Bruin offense. 

Randy July was the lone Indian in double figures, finishing with 22 points, along with four assists, three steals and three rebounds. 

Haskell shot 57.6 percent in the first half and used an 18-4 run to take an eight-point lead at 20-12 midway through the opening period. 

A 3-pointer by Young capped a 10-4 BU run as the Bruins grabbed a 35-34 advantage with 4:09 left in the first half. A 3-pointer by Stand Lovato gave HINU a five-point cushion (48-43) with 16 seconds left before intermission. Young countered with another triple just before the buzzer to give the Bruins some momentum heading into the locker room, despite trailing, 48-46.

The Bruins outshot HINU in the second half, 51.5 to 37.8 percent to pull away from the Indians.  

Worthen-Harris scored 14 points after halftime, shooting 5-of-6 from the field as 12 Bruins saw action. 

Bellevue opened the second half with a 12-3 run capped by a Pogos Trunyan 3-pointer, giving BU a 59-51 lead at the 15-minute mark. A pair of free throws by Shehata gave the Bruins a 20-point advantage (89-69) with 4:49 remaining in the contest. 

The Indians never got closer than 15 points the remainder of the game as BU narrowly missed the century mark with the 99-84 victory. 

The Bruins will travel to Forest City, Iowa on Tuesday (Feb. 10) for a crucial 7:30 p.m. MCAC matchup at Waldorf College. The Warriors gave BU its only conference loss, a 76-74 setback on Jan. 10 in Bellevue. It also marked the last Bruin loss. Live video will be provided for the contest.
