BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The ninth-ranked Bellevue University men's basketball team used a 24-9 scoring run midway through the second half to pull away for a 93-82 win over Hastings College Monday night in the Hampton Inn Holiday Classic at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
The Bruins used a balanced offensive attack with six BU players scoring in double figures, led by Percy Lemle and Olutola Olushola who poured in 16 points apiece. Taylor Young added 15 points and four assists. Alex Worthen-Harris contributed with 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting.
Zach Lenagh led the Broncos with 23 pints and nine rebounds.
Pogos Trunyan scored 11 points all during the Bruins' critical second-half scoring run, connecting on three-consecutive 3-pointers during a three-minute span as BU built a 15-point advantage after Hastings tied the contest on a Lenagh jumper with 17:43 remaining in the game.
Thomas Hammock was the sixth Bruin in double figures, finishing with 10 points. Marquis Aaron pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds in the victory.
Neither team established control in the opening period which featured nine ties and 10 lead changes. The largest lead in the first half was just six points by the Bruins two minutes into the contest.
Worthen-Harris connected on 5-of-6 jumpers to lead BU in the first 20 minutes with 10 points.
Lenagh paced the Broncos in the first half with 14 points and eight rebounds.
After the two teams traded baskets after the intermission, the Bruins heated up in the second half on 64 percent shooting and a 72.7-percent (16-of-22) effort from the charity stripe.
A layup by Lemle gave BU its largest lead at 17 points (79-62) with 3:35 left in the game. Hastings mounted a comeback, pulling to within 10 points on two occasions but the Broncos couldn't crack the margin into single digits as BU nailed eight free throws in the final 1:18 to seal the 93-82 victory.
The Bruins (11-2) will conclude the tournament with a 5 p.m. contest Tuesday (Dec. 30) against Dakota State University.
