Bellevue earns, 90-67, win over MCU in Thanksgiving Classic

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Four Bruins finished in double figures as the Bellevue University men's basketball team recorded a 90-67 win over Mid-Continent University Friday evening in the Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center. 

Bellevue improved to 5-3 on the season in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. MCU fell to 7-5 overall. 

Darius Robinson and Blake Zamudio each scored 18 points to lead the BU offense. Zamudio hit 6-of-8 3-pointers in the win. Shawn Tarver added 16 points and seven rebounds. Jamil Goodwin recorded his second double-double of the season, finishing with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while adding five assists. 

Larry Thompkins II led the Cougars with 16 points and six rebounds. 

Bellevue hit 9-of-16 3-pointers in the first period to build a 52-37 halftime margin.

Robinson scored 12 points in the opening six minutes of the game as Bellevue gained a 21-13 advantage. The Bruins used a 12-point run to build a 42-22 lead at the 6:54 mark. 

After a Zamudio triple gave BU a 45-24 lead at the six-minute mark, MCU scored nine-straight points to cut the deficit to 12 points (45-33) at 3:06 before Bellevue closed the half on a 7-4 run to take a 52-37 halftime lead. 

Zamudio led the Bruins in the opening 20 minutes with 15 points on five 3-pointers. Robinson added 13 points with three 3-pointers, and Tarver collected 10 points and four rebounds in the first half. 

The Cougars got as close as 11 points early in the second period but Bellevue used six points from Tarver to build a 17-point (71-54) lead midway through the stanza. An 11-point run gave BU an 80-54 lead with seven minutes remaining in the contest.

Seven-consecutive Cougar points cut the deficit to 19 points (80-61) at the 4:15 mark. That was as close as MCU would get as BU closed the game on a 10-6 run to earn the 90-67 victory. 

The Bruins hit 12-of-25 3-pointers in the win while holding a 42-31 advantage in rebounds.
