Bruins battle to 4-set win at DSU

DICKINSON, N.D. -- Freshman outside hitter Sierra Athen and senior rightside hitter Shayla Scanlan combined for 23 kills to lead the 22nd-ranked Bellevue University volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-18), 21-25, 25-23, 25-16) victory at Dickinson State University Friday night in North Star Athletic Association action at Scott Gymnasium. 

With the win, the Bruins improved to 11-4 on the season and 2-0 in the NSAA. DSU dropped to 2-11 overall and 0-2 in league play. 

Athen finished with a team-high 13 kills on .323 hitting while adding 10 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. Scanlan registered 10 kills, three blocks and a pair of digs. 

Freshman Rosa Reed-Bouley hit .538 in the win, collecting nine kills with just two errors in 13 attempts while adding a block. 

Freshman setter Olivia Galas recorded her sixth double-double of the season, recording 44 assists and 13 digs, while contributing with four kills of her own. 

The Bruin defense was anchored by freshman Madi Evans who finished with a match-high 21 digs.

The Blue Hawks were paced by Cassie North's 13 kills and two digs. 

Bellevue outhit DSU, .141 to .026. in the victory. 

The turning point for the match occurred in the third set with the Bruins trailing 19-13. BU went on an 8-2 run to tie the set at 21-21. Trailing 23-22, the Bruins got kills from Scanlan and Andrea Carson and were aided by an attack error by North to pull out the 25-23 victory.  

BU never trailed in the fourth set as all 13 Bruins saw action in the decisive 25-16 win. 

The Bruins will travel to Valley City, N.D. on Saturday for an 11 a.m. league contest at Valley City State University.
