BU Volleyball splits on first day of Silver Dollar City Tourney

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. -- The Bellevue University volleyball team opened their 2018 season with a split at the College of the Ozarks Silver Dollar City Tournament.

The Bruins (1-1) defeated Culver-Stockton (0-1) 3-0 in the opener before falling to Southwestern Assemblies of God (1-0) to close out the day.

Bellevue 3, Culver-Stockton 0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-16)

BU began the day with a sweep of Culver-Stockton in which Bellevue hit .313 to the Wildcats' -.031 output.

Rosa Reed-Bouley led Bellevue with eight kills on 13 attacks for a .615 hitting percentage. Shayla Scanlan (.333 hitting) and Sierra Athen (.200 hitting) each recorded seven kills and Andrea Carson (.357 hitting) added six.

Olivia Galas dished out 24 assists and recorded six digs to go along with four kills (.429 hitting).

Athen led the defensive effort with 11 digs while Madi Evans and Fabiola Aviles each totaled nine digs for the Bruins who out-dug Culver-Stockton 47-43 in the match.

Gabby Hickman led the overmatched Wildcats with a double-double – 10 kills and 10 digs – but did so on just .103 hitting. Kendra Gengenbacher (10 assists) and Maryanna Catrine (8 assists) split setting duties for C-SC.

Southwestern Assemblies of God 3, Bellevue 1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19)

In Thursday's nightcap Bellevue was dealt a 3-1 loss to SAGU in a tight four-set match.

Bellevue struggled to get going offensively as the Bruins were unable to crack the .200-mark hitting until the fourth game and swung at just a .163 clip for the match to the Lions' .232 rate.

Oliva Galas recorded her first collegiate double-double with a 29-assist, 13-dig performance to go along with six kills on .294 hitting. She was supported defensively by Madi Evans (14), Sidney Craig (13), and Fabiola Aviles (10), each of whom reached double figures in digs on the evening.

Sierra Athen (.135) and Andrea Carson (.259) led the offensive with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Shayla Scanlan (.054) and Rosa Reed-Bouley (.368) each recorded nine kills for BU.

Kali Shaw (22, .300) and Suzanny Figueiredo (18, .212) combined for 40 kills on .255 hitting for SAGU. Celi Bruce totaled a match-best 33 digs and Sophia Ivy directed the Lions attack with 39 assists to go along with five kills (.312) and six digs.
