BU sweeps Mayville State, Grace; win streak reaches double-digits

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The 19th-ranked Bellevue University volleyball team put together two of their most complete efforts as they won a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.

The Bruins opened the day by defeating Mayville State University 3-0 (25-8, 25-8, 25-15) in North Star Athletic Association action. BU followed that up with a 3-0 (25-8, 25-9, 25-13) triumph over Grace later on in the afternoon.

BU runs their win streak to 10 matches with the pair of victories, improving to 16-3 (4-0 NSAA) on the year.

The split by Mayville State and two losses by Grace see the Comets move to 3-16 (0-3 NSAA) and Royals dip to 3-14 for the year, respectively.

In between the matches contested by Bellevue Mayville State defeated Grace by a score of 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-21).

The Bruins began the day by overpowering Mayville State with a season-best .402 team hitting percentage while holding the Comets to a (-).056 attack effort.

Shayla Scanlan again paced the Bruin attack with nine kills (.538 hitting) on the afternoon. Michaela Gardner pounded out seven kills (.353) while Mikaylah Gillespie (6 kills, .667), Rachel Wald (6, .385), Hope Lambrecht (5, .444), and Andrea Carson (4, .800) were all efficient on the attack as well.

Maddie Squiers racked up 37 assists to direct the offense. The defensive effort was anchored by Cheyenne Mahnke's 10-digs as BU out-dug Mayville State 35-28 in the match. Scanlan and Lambrecht each had four blocks as the Bruins out-blocked MSU5-3 on the day.

BU followed up their best hitting performance in their first game Saturday by turning in their second-highest attacking percentage in the night-cap win over Grace. BU out-hit Grace .374-.031 as the Bruins made short work of their guests.

Shayla Scanlan (11 kills, .455 hitting), Emma Myers (9, .533), and Michaela Gardner (8, .533) were the driving forces in the Bruin attack as the combined for 28 kills on .500 hitting.

Maddie Squiers guided the Bruins' .374 hitting percentage with 36 assists while also recording 11 digs and four kills of her own (.429 hitting). Taylor Holz paced Bellevue with 16 digs while Cheyenne Mahnke joined Holz and Squiers in double-figures with 10 digs of her own.

Aaliyah Dunbar totaled five kills on .294 hitting to pace Grace while Destiny Vazquez (15 digs), Taylor Thompson (12), and Chloe Corbett (10) all recorded 10-plus digs.

Bellevue next plays on Tuesday, Sept. 26 when they host Presentation College for a North Star Athletic Association match at 5 p.m.

Mayville State will host Oak Hills Christian College for a non-conference tilt at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26 in their next match.

Grace will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 29 when they travel to University Park, Ill. for a 7 p.m. match against Governors State University.
