Bruins wrap up season with win over Mobile

SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Playing their final match of the season, the No. 22 Bellevue University volleyball team came away with a 3-0 victory over the University of Mobile on Thursday evening at the NAIA Volleyball National Tournament being held at the Tyson Events Center.

BU won by scores of 25-22, 25-20, and 25-23. The win allowed the Bruins to finish the year at 32-12 overall while Mobile's loss dropped them to 31-11 with losses in each of their three Pool E matches.

This season was the first since 2013 that Bellevue reached the National Tournament and the first since 2012 in which they advanced to Sioux City to participate in pool play.

On the evening, Bellevue out-hit Mobile .202-.081 and held advantages in each of the match's three sets. The Bruins also owned a 63-56 edge in digs.

Marylyn led BU with 10 kills on .214 hitting. Pakalana Helekahi and Shayla Scanlan supported her on the attack with nine and eight kills, respectively. Mikaylah Gillespie added six while Maddie Squiers and Hope Lambrecht each added five.

Squiers direct the Bruin offense with 32 assists to go along with 15 digs en route to her 17th double-double of the year. Taylor Holz led Bellevue with 16 digs and Verenice Chaparro joined her and Squiers in double figures with 10 of her own.

Hannah Wentland led the Rams with eight kills on .357 hitting but it wasn't enough to overcome Bellevue's balanced attack. Hannah Buck and Mirella Gatterdam aided the cause with seven kills each.

Jessica Bagwell was the top defensive player with 21 digs on the evening. Annie Kate Hudson piled up 19 assists and seven digs while Hannah Seale contributed seven assists and six digs for Mobile.
