Bruins top Valley City, sweep fourth-straight match

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Shayla Scanlan and Hope Lambrecht combined for 22 kills as the No. 21 Bellevue University volleyball team swept Valley City State University, 3-0, in a North Star Athletic Association match on Friday evening at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.

Bellevue won the first set 25-13 before taking the second set 25-14 and earning the sweep with a 25-20 victory in the third set. With the win the Bruins improve to 21-8 overall and now rest at 8-2 in the conference while the Vikings fall to 7-18 overall and 3-6 in the NSAA.

Maddie Squiers directed BU to a .265 hitting effort with 39 assists to go along with six digs and three kills. Bellevue out-hit their guests .265 to (-).010 on the evening and held 52-41 and 8-7 advantages in both digs and blocks, respectively.

Offensively, Bellevue was led by Scanlan's 12 kills on .450 hitting while Lambrecht contributed 10 kills on .444 hitting. Mikaylah Gillespie, Michaela Gardner, and Rachel Wald each added six kills for the Bruins.

Clarissa Olsen led the Vikings with five kills on the night and Taylor Balkan dished out 15 assists for VCSU.

On defense, Taylor Holz paced the host Bruins with 17 digs and U'i Kepani joined her in double figures with 10 digs of her own. Lambrecht had the lone solo block for BU and Gillespie led the team with four block assists.

Valley City's defensive effort was anchored by Jaycee George's 13 digs. Hailie Wilds dug 10 balls in the loss.

Bellevue returns to action tomorrow as they host a triangular. The Bruins host Mayville State at noon and College of the Ozarks at 4 p.m. The Comets and Bobcats will face off against each other at 2 p.m.

Valley City travels to Madison, S.D. tomorrow for a 7 p.m. match against Dakota State.
