BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University volleyball team swept a pair of matches on day one of the annual Premier Labor Day Classic. The Bruins dispatched Cornerstone 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-16) in their opener at the Lied Center before rolling over #15 Rocky Mountain 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-16) at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center to close out the evening.
Bellevue moves to 6-4 on the season with the two victories. The Bruins play two more matches tomorrow – both at the Lied Center – against #22 Ottawa University at 3 p.m. and #10 MidAmerica Nazarene University at 7 p.m.
Bellevue 3, Cornerstone 0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-16)
Pakalana Helekahi racked up 12 kills on .286 hitting to lead Bellevue to a 3-0 opening match victory over Cornerstone University in game one of the 2016 Premier Labor Day Classic.
Mikaylah Gillespie and Hope Lambrecht both added nine kills and Michaela Gardner chipped in with eight for the Bruins who hit .273 as a team.
Maddie Squiers dished out 35 assists and added four kills while running the BU offense.
Taylor Holz recorded 18 digs and Verenice Chaparro added 13. Lambrecht added a pair of solo blocks and matched Gillespie with a team-best four block assists.
Bellevue held distinct advantages both offensively and defensively against the Golden Eagles. BU out-hit Cornerstone .273-.103 and out-dug the visitors 61-47.
It was the first match this season for the Bruins that ended in a sweep. Previously Bellevue had played seven four-set matches and a five-setter.
Bellevue 3, #15 Rocky Mountain 0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-16)
Holz (16) and Chaparro (13) combined for 29 digs to anchor the Bruin defense, which held the Bears to a .038 hitting percentage. Tess Hellerud led RMC with six kills on 11 errorless swings, while adding seven blocks.
