COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Bellevue University volleyball team split a pair of matches on the second day of the Lindsey Wilson College Classic on Saturday afternoon. Bellevue fell to College of Coastal Georgia 3-1 (18-25, 25-18, 21-25, 18-25) in the opener before topping University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) 3-1 (25-22, 25-15, 24-26, 25-10)  in the nightcap.

The Bruins (2-2) are off until Friday, Aug. 26 when they head to Orange City, Iowa for four games at the Red Raider Classic. BU plays Dordt and Morningside on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.

(RV) Coastal Georgia 3, (RV) Bellevue 1 (25-18, 18-25, 25-21, 25-18)

Bellevue got strong hitting performances from Shayla Scanlan (13 kills, .375 pct.), Pakalani Helekahi (13 kills, .241 pct.), and Mikaylah Gillespie (9 kills, .381 pct.) on their way to hitting .231 as a team.

Defensively, the Bruins were led by Verenice Chaparro's 13 digs while Helekahi chipped in 11. Gillespie and Scanlan each finished with five block assists.

Maddie Squiers directed the offense with 42 assists to complement her four kills (.273).

Coastal Georgia out-hit the Bruins by a .266-.231 margin. They were led by the duo of Kyra White (17 kills, .667 pct.) and Rachel Amundson (15 kills, .500 pct.). Alyssa Keeve paced the mariners with 17 digs and Cayley Meiners notched 41 assists on the match.

(RV) Bellevue 3, (RV) Cumberlands 1 (25-22, 25-15, 24-26, 25-10)

The Bruins wrapped up their weekend at the .500-mark with a four-set victory over Cumberlands.

Pakalana Helekahi and Mikaylah Gillespie both reached double figures with 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Helekahi hit .237 on her way to her third double-double of the young season. Gillespie finished the match hitting .292.

Maddie Squiers directed the attack with 36 assists. Verenice Chaparro (23) and Taylor Holz (12) led the defensive effort combining for 35 digs.

Bellevue out-hit Cumberlands on the match by a .208-.113 edge.

Jessica Severs led Cumberlands with eight kills while Lindsey Short registered 33 assists, and Megan Willoughby tallied a team-best 16 digs.
