COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Bellevue University volleyball team opened the 2016 season by splitting a pair of matches at the Lindsey Wilson Classic Friday. The Bruins lost 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-12, 25-16) to the host school, third-ranked Lindsey Wilson College, before rebounding with a four-game win (25-19, 20-25, 25-22, 25-19) over the University of Northwestern Ohio in the finale. 

The Bruins (1-1) will conclude action in the tournament on Saturday (Aug. 20) with a noon match against College of Coastal Georgia and a 4 p.m. contest with University of the Cumberlands (Ky.). Both teams are receiving votes in the NAIA pre-season top 25 poll. 

No. 3 Lindsey Wilson 3, Bellevue 1

Pakalana Helekahi recorded a double-double to lead the Bruins in the four-set loss to the Blue Raiders. She collected a match-high 15 kills, to go along with 12 digs. Hope Lambrecht hit .333 with nine kills and only one error in 24 attempts. Michalea Gardner added nine kills, a pair of digs and a block.

Freshman Maddie Squiers also notched a double-double in her collegiate debut, finishing with 33 assists and 10 digs, while adding three kills.

Five Bruins finished in double figures in digs, led by Lauren Colpitts with 14.

Yeniffer Ramirez (14) and Eileen Acuna (11) combined for 25 kills to pace the Blue Raiders, who outhit BU, .216 to .142 and held a 10-7 advantage in blocks.  

Bellevue 3, Northwestern Ohio 1

Lambrecht led the BU offense with 11 kills in the win over UNOH, while adding five digs, three blocks and a pair of assists. Gardner was also in double figures, finishing 10 kills on .292 hitting. 

Helekahi recorded six of the Bruins 14 service aces and added eight kills, seven digs, and two blocks. Mikaylah Gillespie led the BU blockers with four stuffs, combined with eight kills and a pair of digs. 

Squiers collected her second double-double of the day with 42 assists and 12 digs, while adding two blocks and a service ace. 

Verenice Chaparro had a team-high 13 digs in the win. 

Stephanie Hanewold led the Racers with 13 kills on .435 hitting, while producing a match-high five blocks.
