Wardian leads Bruins in sweep over Flames

OMAHA, Neb. -- Junior middle blocker Maureen Wardian pounded 11 kills on .556 hitting to lead the 24th-ranked Bellevue University volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-18) sweep at College of St. Mary Tuesday night at the Lied Center.

The Bruins improved to 28-11 on the season and 12-1 in the MCAC. College of St. Mary fell to 16-15 overall and 7-5 in league play.

Senior middle blocker Jaclyn Thorson and freshman outside hitter Annie Benson both added nine kills and senior libero Katy Gregory led the BU defense with 17 digs.

Sophomore setter Jordan Broady directed the Bruin offense to a .356 attack percentage, while collecting 41 assists, three digs, three kills, and two blocks.

Bellevue closed the opening set on a 7-1 run and hit .414 as a team en route to the 25-17 win. Thorson led the Bruins in the first set with four kills.

BU used an 8-1 spurt midway through the second set in cruising to the 25-15 victory. Wardian had five kills on nine swings and the Bruins hit .333.

Wardian, Thorson, and Benson all had four kills in the third set and Bellevue hit .323 as a team. BU opened up a tight game midway through the set, going on a 7-2 run to pull away for the 25-18 win.

The Bruins will host league-leading College of the Ozarks (26-10, 13-0 MCAC) on Friday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center. Bellevue's three seniors Kylie Davis, Gregory, and Thorson will be honored following the match.
