Women's soccer suffers 1-0 setback against Columbia

OMAHA, Neb. -- Molly Klein scored in the 65^th minute to send (RV) Columbia College to a 1-0 victory over the Bellevue University women's soccer team on Wednesday evening at Caniglia Field on the campus of the University of Nebraska Omaha.

After a first half which saw Columbia dominate possession and build a 12-2 advantage in shots the game reached intermission scoreless.

Columbia saw the best scoring opportunity of the first half in the final minute of the period but consecutive attempts on goal from Jewel Morelan and Mallory Holzer came up empty. Morelan was stopped on a sliding one-on-one opportunity and Holzer saw her rebound attempt parried away.

The Cougars broke through as the game neared the midway point of the second half. Emma Laney played a cross into the box that found Molly Klein's head and Klein headed home the goal for a 1-0 Columbia lead at the 65-minute mark.

Bellevue landed just two shots on goal in the game, one from Emily Weyant in the first half and another in the second from Daisy Ochoa-Rojas.

For the game, Columbia out-shot Bellevue 23-3 and put 10 shots on frame. Bruin keeper Sabrina Staufenbiel was up to the challenge as she made a career-high nine saves to keep her team in the game.

Coach Tom White:

"We started off very well but got frustrated with ourselves when we were unable to solve their advantage in possession as they controlled play throughout the first half. I could not fault our effort and the fight we showed throughout the 90. We now have a quick turnaround – we recover and focus on the next game."

Player of the Match:

Sabrina Staufenbiel -- She made a career-high nine saves including several of great quality to keep Bellevue in the match repeatedly.

Bellevue is back on the road this weekend for a pair of games. The Bruins play at Northwestern on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 3 p.m. from the NWC Soccer Complex in Orange City, Iowa before making their way to Sioux Center, Iowa on Monday, Sept. 2 for a 3 p.m. kick-off against Dordt from the Dordt Soccer Complex.
