Bruins fly past Comets for fourth-straight win

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Elexis Martinez notched her second-straight double-double to lead the Bellevue University women's basketball team to an 83-41 victory over visiting Cottey College on Saturday afternoon at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.

Cottey got out to an early 7-3 lead but Bellevue out-scored the Comets 20-5 to close the first quarter to take a 23-12 lead after one period of play.

BU dominated the middle quarters, out-scoring Cottey 45-14. That was part of a larger 67-14 margin, which spanned the final 3:02 of the first quarter and the first 3:40 of the fourth quarter.

Elexis Martinez led all players with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Jamie Winkler and Jerrene Richardson joined her in double figures with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Richardson was one of three Bruins, along with Taeha Pankey and Cassie Jones, to dish out four assists in the game.

Lexi Allen and Delaney VanBlaricon supported the BU bench efforts, which out-scored the Comet bench 37-9, with eight points apiece.

Kelsey Acton and Cassie Ogden scored 10 apiece to lead the Comets. Taylor Coonce added eight points and a team-high 13 rebounds.

Defensively, Bellevue limited Cottey to just 23.8 percent shooting and forced 21 turnovers which they converted into 25 points at the other end. Conversely, BU shot 38.5 percent from the floor and turned the ball over just 11 times.
