Bruins score 27 runs in sweep over Eagles

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team pounded out 26 hits and scored 27 runs as the Bruins swept Oklahoma Wesleyan University, 15-0 in five innings and 12-3 in six innings, Saturday in MCAC action at Hall of Fame Fields.

Freshman Shelby Kindelin tossed a two-hitter in the opener and recorded two homers in the nightcap as the Bruins improved to 30-14 on the season and 3-1 in the MCAC. OWU fell to 14-23 overall and 5-3 in league play.

Kindelin drove in five runs on the day. Brooke Ellis went 6-for-7 in the twin-bill with six RBIs. Amanda Neumann finished 4-for-7 with seven RBIs.

The Bruins will head to Peru, Neb. on Wednesday, April 18 for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at Peru State College.

Game 1: Bellevue 15, Oklahoma Wesleyan 0 (5 innings)
Bellevue collected 12 hits, including four home runs and Kindelin notched her second shutout of the season as the Bruins cruised to the 15-0 win in five innings in the opener.

Kindelin allowed just two hits and one walk, while striking out six batters, as she improved to 6-4 on the season.

Neumann went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a home run to lead the BU offense.

The Bruins built an early 3-0 lead in the first on RBI singles by Neumann and Ellis and a sacrifice fly by Kelsie Bridgeford.

Bellevue laced three homers in the second inning by Neumann, Katie Malloy, and Bridgeford, scoring six total runs while extending the advantage to 9-0. 

A three-run homer by Kathryn Wardian, an RBI single by Neumann and a two-run double by Ellis made it 15-0 in the third.

Game 2: Bellevue 12, Oklahoma Wesleyan 3 (6 innings)
Kindelin went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, two home runs, and a triple to pace the BU offensive attack. Freshman Taylor Mohler earned the win, scattering five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in six innings of work.

The Eagles grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Candace Perkins scored from third on a passed ball. Bellevue answered in the bottom of the second with three runs on an RBI single by Ellis and a two-run homer by Malloy.

A bases-clearing double by Neumann and a two-run homer by Ellis pushed the BU lead to 8-1 in the second. 

A solo shot by Jessica Farris cut the deficit to 8-2 in the top of the third frame.

An RBI triple by Kindelin gave BU a 9-2 margin in the bottom of the third.  

Farris' seccond solo homer drew the Eagles to within six runs at 9-3 in the fifth. Kindelin responded with a solo shot over the center field fence to push the BU lead to 10-3 in the bottom of the fifth.

The Bruins ended the game in the sixth with Kindelin's two-run homer to center field to make the final score, 12-3.
