Bruins shutout Columbia, 1-0
COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Adam Sherwood's second-half goal backed a four-save performance from Kaden Simpson, standing up as the No. 24-ranked Bellevue University men's soccer team downed Columbia College 1-0 on Wednesday evening at R. Marvin Owens Field.
With the win, Bellevue ups its record to 9-6-1 on the season while Columbia falls to 6-5-2.
Both sides had chances in the first half, combining on 12 shot attempts with Bellevue peppering five on the Columbia goal and the Cougars firing two on frame. Neither team was able to convert and the game advanced to halftime scoreless.
The game remained scoreless until the 56th minute when Juan Lagares connected with Adam Sherwood for the only goal of the match. Sherwood slotted home his team-leading ninth goal of the season and fourth game-winner.
The Bruins seemed content to see out the victory from there. Columbia outshot BU 8-3 the rest of the way but were unable to solve Kaden Simpson as the Bruins held on for the victory.
Simpson was tasked with making four saves to earn his seventh shutout of the season. It was the team's eighth clean sheet of the year.
Osman Naz totaled seven saves in the loss for the Cougars, who outshot Bellevue 15-12 overall, although they were outshot 8-5 on goal. Columbia won five corners to BU's three.
Bellevue returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 22, when it hits the road for a showdown in Bartlesville, Okla., with No. 1-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan University for a 7:30 p.m. kick-off from the OKWU Soccer Complex.
