Bruins post 97-66 win over Haskell in MCAC Tournament

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The 10th-ranked Bellevue University men's basketball team defeated Haskell Indian Nations University 97-66 Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.

Bellevue (26-5) advances to the MCAC Tournament semifinals against York College tomorrow (March 1). Tip-off against the Panthers, who defeated Waldorf College, 98-89, will be at 4:00 p.m.

Haskell Indian Nations ends its season with a 7-22 overall record.

Taylor Young paced BU with 21 points and four assists. He made eight of his 11 field goal attempts.

Lee Ames chipped in 17 points, three rebounds, one block and one steal while Michael Dotson finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Given Kalipinde recorded seven points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals and Darren Redstar added eight points and eight rebounds, including six offensive rebounds, off the bench.

The Bruins raced out to an early 12-4 lead before a 6-3 Indian spurt pulled HINU within five, 15-10, at the 14:08 mark in the opening period. HINU never got any closer as BU finished the first half on a 37-21 run to take a 52-31 advantage at halftime.

BU shot 47.5 percent from the field and held the Indians to a 35.1 shooting percentage in the first half. Ten players scored for the Bruins in the first stanza and were paced by Ames and Young who both scored nine points.

The Bruins led by as many as 34 in the second half en route to the 31-point conference tournament win, 97-66.

TsaLiDi Sequoyah led the Indians with a game-high 22 points and added seven rebounds.
