OSKALOOSA, Iowa -- William Penn University defeated the Bellevue University men's basketball team 90-88 Monday night in nonconference action at the Penn Gymnasium.

With the win, William Penn won its second-straight game and improved to 2-4 while Bellevue dropped to 4-2.

Taylor Young led the Bruins with 23 points, nine rebounds and dished out five assists while Michael Dotson scored 14 points and added two steals.

Thomas Hammock scored 12 points, on four 3-pointers, and Lee Ames chipped in 11 points.

Given Kalipinde finished with nine points, nine rebounds and three assists.

The Statesmen scored 10 of the first 12 points before the Bruins went on a 20-4 run to take a 22-14 lead. Trailing 28-22, WPU closed the first half on a 26-13 spurt to take a 48-41 lead at halftime. The Bruins were plagued by 12 turnovers in the opening stanza.

BU erased its seven-point halftime deficit on a 16-8 run to open the second half to take a one-point lead, 57-56. The contest would remain tight the remaining of the period as neither team led by more than five points.

Trailing by three (68-65), WPU scored eight of the next 11 points to take a 73-71 lead. The Bruins answered back with a 3-pointer and layup by Ames to take a 76-73 advantage.

The two teams would exchange points over the next two minutes. After two made free throws by Young, the Bruins would take their final lead of the game, 85-84, with 39 seconds remaining.

A three-point play by WPU's Kelly Madison and a free throw by Marc Wilson gave the Statesmen an 88-85 edge with just 13 seconds remaining in the game.

Kalipinde missed a three and WPU made a pair of free throws to make the score 90-85. Young drained a 3-pointer with just under one second remaining to pull the Bruins within two.

The Statesmen were unable to inbound the ball and were called for a five-second violation to give the Bruins one last chance with .07 on the clock, but Kalipinde's baseline jumper rimmed out at the buzzer to give WPU the two-point win, 90-88.

Madison led the Statesmen with 36 points and six rebounds off the bench.

The Bruins will host the Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 29-30 at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
