OMAHA, Neb. -- The 10th-ranked Bellevue University baseball team blasted four home runs in a doubleheader sweep over Central Christian College Friday afternoon at Westgate Field, winning 6-1 and 7-2.
Bellevue improved to 31-6-1 on the season and 12-2 in the MCAC. Central Christian dropped to 13-30 overall and 3-15 in league action.
The four-game series will conclude on Saturday (April 13) with 1 p.m. doubleheader at Westgate Field.
Game 1: Bellevue 6, Central Christian 1
Robert Greco tossed a complete-game five-hitter and Tanner Moore went 3-for-5 with a triple, home run, three runs scored, and an RBI to pace the Bruins to the 6-1 win in the opener.
The Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Brian Embery that drove in Nate Mullins who led off the inning with a double off the left field fence.
Bellevue increased the lead to 2-0 in the third after Moore tripled to deep center field and came home on a CCC fielding error.
Moore led off the fifth inning with a solo homer over the left center field fence to increase the advantage to 3-0.
The Tigers got on the board in the top of the sixth on a ground-out RBI by Devin Roberts to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Moore scored in the bottom of the seventh after registering a single up the middle, advancing to second on a walk, and scoring on a throwing error by Tiger shortstop Martin Guevara, to increase the margin to 4-1.
Consecutive doubles by Andy Smolinski and Beau Dahmen gave BU a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth. A bases-loaded wild pitch made the final, 6-1.
Greco improved to 6-2 on the season, scattering five hits with nine strikeouts and three walks in nine innings.
Game 2: Bellevue 7, Central Christian 2
Mullins drove in five runs, including a pair of two-run homers to lead Bellevue to the 7-2 win in the nightcap. Ryan Knutz also collected a home run in the victory.
An RBI double by Mullins gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Tigers tied it in the top of the second, when Stephen Boedeker scored from third on a wild pitch from Michael Calderon.
The Bruins tallied four runs in the bottom of the third on a solo homer by Knutz, an RBI double by Moore and a two-run homer by Mullins, to push the lead to 5-1.
The Tigers got a run back in the top of the fourth, scoring on an RBI single to right field by Tyler Gniadek, to slice the BU lead to 5-2.
Mullins belted his second home run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, a two-run shot over the left center field fence to give BU a 7-2 lead.
Calderon (4-1) got the complete-game win, allowing four hits and five walks, while striking out seven batters in seven innings.
